On the 2018 RC-5 sample, Play had to be held for at least four seconds, delay start could be set up to six hours, the stop button could be disabled in software, and a full memory stopped without overwriting. Plugging the logger into USB is not, in that write-up, the start of the file.
What did the buttons do in that 2018 test?
Verstraten wrote that the left key had to be held as Play for at least four seconds before recording began, that software could forbid the right-hand stop, and that a delay start could postpone the first point by up to six hours. When memory filled, recording stopped. Old points were not overwritten.
Those are observations about one 2018 sample and one Windows program. A current RC-5+ or RC-51H page that claims the same behaviour will have to match button events to the first and last CSV rows. This publication has not done that pairing.
How does a PC-tethered logger stop differently?
Xanthium’s four-channel tutorial starts when the Python host sends $ and stops on Ctrl+C. The file lives on the computer. If the computer sleeps, the record stops. That is a different start/stop contract from a battery USB pen that is meant to run in a fridge.
Luke Miller’s 2010 logger wrote LOGGER00.csv and opened a new file after a restart. Again, that is his firmware, not a shop USB stick.
What does this page not claim about starting a record?
This page does not say that plugging a logger into USB starts a record. It does not say that every Elitech pen uses a four-second Play or a six-hour delay. Those numbers stay attached to the 2018 RC-5 note. An original page that reports those button times would have to list the model, firmware, software, the seconds held, the delay setting, and the matching export rows.
